Visit wise.com to register. Provide email, phone number, and passport/ID scan for identity verification. Business accounts additionally require company registration documents and UBO information. Verification typically takes 1-2 business days.
Activate the needed currency balances in the Dashboard. 10+ currencies provide local bank details (USD routing number, EUR IBAN, GBP sort code, etc.). Activation is instant with no extra fees.
Enter the local bank details provided by Wise into the paying platform (Stripe payout account, client invoice, platform payment settings). Key advantage: you can give US clients a USD local account and EU clients a EUR IBAN, avoiding cross-border wire fees.
Apply for a Wise debit card for global spending and ATM withdrawals ($100-200 free per month). The card auto-debits from your balance at the best exchange rate. Very practical for cross-border OPC travel or subscribing to overseas services.
Configure target exchange rate alerts or set auto-conversion rules (e.g., auto-convert $5,000 when GBP/USD reaches 1.30). For cross-border e-commerce OPCs, exchange rate fluctuations can eat 3-5% of profits — auto-conversion is a free risk management tool.
Wise's API enables automation: create recipients, send payments, get exchange rates, sync transactions to accounting systems. For technically capable OPCs, automation can save hours of monthly financial reconciliation.
Wise is FCA-regulated but funds are not covered by FDIC insurance (US) or FSCS (UK). Wise holds user funds in segregated accounts, but theoretically if Wise went bankrupt, fund recovery could be prolonged. It is not recommended to keep more than short-term operating needs in Wise.
Single transfers exceeding $10,000-50,000 may trigger AML/KYC manual review, delaying transactions by 1-5 business days. If your OPC needs frequent large cross-border payments (e.g., paying suppliers), prepare transaction source documentation (contracts, invoices) in advance.
Wise advertises 50+ supported currencies, but only 10+ currencies offer true local bank routing details. The remaining currencies can only do currency exchange, not receive local transfers. If your customer base is concentrated in specific countries (e.g., Japan JPY, South Korea KRW), verify first whether local accounts are supported for that currency.
If your primary income comes from platforms like Fiverr, Upwork, or Amazon, Payoneer has deeper integrations with those platforms (direct in-platform withdrawal). Wise is better suited for OPCs with their own Stripe accounts who bill clients directly. Having both isn't a conflict.
Wise Business requires submitting company registration documents, UBO (Ultimate Beneficial Owner) declaration, business description, and expected transaction volumes. Emerging industries (crypto, gambling, adult) are outright rejected. If your OPC business spans multiple domains, focus your description on the clearest primary business.
